Online or in-person counselling: which is right for you?
Many counsellors now work online and by phone as well as in person. Research suggests online counselling can work well for many people, so the choice often comes down to what suits you.
In person
- A dedicated space away from home, which some people find helps them open up
- Easier for some to read and feel the connection
- Means travelling, and choosing a counsellor within reach
Online or by phone
- No travel, and a much wider choice of counsellors
- Easier to fit around work, caring or health conditions
- Some people find it easier to talk from their own space, or without being seen
- Needs a private space and a reliable connection
Getting the most from online sessions
- Find somewhere private where you won’t be overheard. Some people use a parked car or headphones.
- Test your video link a few minutes before.
- Turn off notifications so you aren’t interrupted.
- Give yourself a few minutes afterwards before going back to your day.
You can filter the Therapist Search directory to show counsellors who work online, by phone or in person.
