How much does counselling cost in the UK?
Cost is one of the biggest worries for people thinking about counselling. Prices vary a lot, and there are often lower-cost options if you know where to look.
Typical private fees
Most private counsellors in the UK charge somewhere between about £40 and £90 for a session of around 50 minutes. Some charge more, particularly in London or for specialist work, couples counselling or very experienced practitioners.
Every counsellor on Therapist Search shows their fee on their profile, and you can filter the directory by the most you want to pay.
What affects the price
- Where the counsellor works, as city fees are often higher
- Their experience and specialist training
- Session length and format
- Whether it’s individual, couples or family work
Ways to pay less
- Reduced rates: many counsellors keep a few lower-cost places for people on low incomes, students or those receiving benefits. It’s always fine to ask.
- Counsellors in training: some services offer low-cost sessions with trainee counsellors, who are supervised by qualified practitioners.
- Your employer: many workplaces have an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) that offers a few free, confidential sessions.
- Your university or college: most have free student counselling services.
- Charities: some charities offer free or low-cost support for particular situations, such as bereavement or domestic abuse.
- The NHS: talking therapies are free on the NHS, though there may be a wait. See our guide to counselling on the NHS.
Paying for sessions
With private counselling you pay your counsellor directly, usually by bank transfer or card. Ask about their cancellation policy at the start, as many charge for sessions cancelled at short notice.
